지난 겨울과 봄, 여름이 지나고 황금빛 눈부신 가을의 절정에서 2023년 두 번째 진주전통공예비엔날레를 시작합니다. 자연의 시간에 따라 마음과 정성을 다해 오늘의 진주전통공예비엔날레를 함께 준비해주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다.

매섭고 매마른 바람을 맞으며 자갈과 진흙 먼지로 흔들리던 은행나무 길을 따라 진주차량고를 처음 만났습니다. 1925년 진주역과 함께 세워진 차량고는 그 긴 시간의 흔적을 묵묵히 견뎌내고 있었습니다. 민족의 아픔인 전쟁의 상처까지도. 오늘 2023진주전통공예비엔날레의 공예 작품 1호는 진주차량고로 기억되기를 바랍니다. 흙, 불, 나무, 바람의 시간을 거스르지 않고 삶의 모든 혼을 지켜온 공예작가들의 작품이 한데 어우러지는 진주전통공예비엔날레의 새로운 전통이 될 것입니다.

차량정비고 앞 100년 된 은행나무에 푸른 녹음이 시작될 무렵 진주소목의 새로운 전통을 세우기 위해 ‘진주소목 in Design’ 프로젝트를 시도했습니다. 진주를 대표하는 전통소목과 현대 디자인이 만나 창조적 갈등과 즐거운 새로움을 경험했습니다. 진주소목은 우리의 자랑이며 세계로 향하는 새로운 길을 열어 갈 것입니다.

유난히 뜨거웠던 여름을 지나는 동안에도 가구의 짜임을 맞추며, 흙을 다듬고, 쇠를 두드리고, 칠을 하며, 실을 엮어내는 공예작가들의 시간은 멈추지 않았습니다. 여기에 37인의 국내 공예작가와 10인의 해외 공예작가들의 작품이 모였습니다. 오늘 2023진주전통공예비엔날레의 또 하나의 전통이 세워지는 순간입니다. 유네스코 공예 및 민속예술 창의도시 진주시의 새로운 문화예술의 역사를 기록합니다. 교류와 공감을 통해 한국공예는 세계와 소통하게 될 것입니다.

구름도 날아가고 달도 날아갈 텐데 해가 날아와서 아침이 되는 바람의 모습을 바라보는 어느 공예작가의 마음이 오늘의 공예입니다. 오늘도 바람은 날아와 나무는 자라듯이 오늘의 공예는 변함없이 내일의 새로운 전통을 세워갑니다.

After the passing of last winter, spring, and summer, we are launching the second Jinju Traditional Crafts Biennale 2023 at the height of the splendid golden autumn. We sincerely appreciate everyone who has contributed with their hearts and dedication to the preparation of the event, in harmony with rhythm of nature.

In the midst of the harsh and dry winds, we encountered the Jinju Maintenance Workshop for the first time, as the ginkgo trees swayed in the dust of gravel and mud. Built in 1925, alongside JInju Station, the workshop silently withstands the traces of time, even the wounds of the nation during the war. We hope that the maintenance workshop will be remembered as the masterpiece of 2023 Jinju Traditional Crafts Biennale, where craftsmen persist the time of handling earth, fire, wood, and wind, forming a new tradition of the event.

We started ‘Jinju Somok in Design’ project to establish a new tradition of Jinju Somok, as the hundred-year-old ginkgo tree in front of Jinju Maintenance Workshop began to show a deep green. The meeting between Jinju Somok and modern design provided us with creative conflicts and joyful novelties. Jinju Somok will pave a new path towards the world, enhancing our pride.

During an exceptionally hot summer, the artists never stopped as they assembled furniture, polished clay, hammered metal, painted, and wove thread. At this event, the works of 37 domestic craft artists and 10 international craft artists have been gathered together. This moment marks another tradition of the 2023 Jinju Traditional Crafts Biennale. It records a new history of cultural arts in Jinju, the UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. Korean crafts will communicate with the world through exchange and empathy.

Even as clouds and the moon may pass, the sight of the sun rising and the wind becoming morning represents the heart of a certain artisan's craft today. Just as the wind comes and trees grow, today's craft consistently establish tomorrow's new tradition."
